SUMMARY: The Senior Technologist is responsible for performing polysomnographic and all other neurophysiologic studies. This includes the preparation of laboratory facilities and equipment, the preparation of patients for recording data acquisition for all tests performed in the laboratory (these tests include the NPSG, MSLT, MWT, EEG, and research protocols). The Senior Technologist is responsible for the accuracy and integrity of data collected in the laboratory.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
This position requires at least 5 years of experience in a sleep disorders center or laboratory at or above the level of Junior Technologist or its equivalent. The employee must exhibit proficiency in polysomnographic testing and must be able to conduct the essential technical components of sleep laboratory studies (including NPSG, MSLT, CPAP/BiPAP titration, and research protocols). Related duties include venipuncture, EKG, vital signs, neurological safety assessments, and psychometric assessments. A B.A. or B.S. degree is required or relevant experience. Individuals with advanced or graduate degrees are desired. Certification in basic cardiopulmonary life support is required, and periodic recertification is mandatory and must always be maintained. Competency in all job-related skills must be exhibited and documented prior to assuming this position. The Senior Technologist must be able to interact well with patients, must be able to work independently, and must be able to assume responsibilities for laboratory operation and patient care in the absence of the Chief Technologist, Team Leader, or Senior Technologist.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following description covers the most significant duties performed but does not exclude other work assignments.
- Performs digital and analog sleep studies and other laboratory tests, attending to all aspects of laboratory and patient preparation and data acquisition. Obtains video and audio recordings of patients (when required) that meet laboratory standards. Performs specialized procedures, including NPSG, CPAP/BiPAP titration, and O2 administration as indicated by physician’s orders and research protocols.
- Reviews the patient’s chart/montage card prior to the sleep study and determine the appropriate study procedure. Ensures that proper forms are completed by the patient and entered into the patient’s medical record (e.g. consent forms, pre/post sleep questionnaires). Is responsible for ensuring that appropriate technical notes and other documentation are entered into the medical record.
- Prepares the patient prior to the beginning of the sleep study making accommodations that are appropriate to the physical and mental status of the patient. Prepares patient for polysomnographic recording by placing appropriate sensors and confirming signal integrity.
- Maintains, calibrates, and operates polygraphs for sleep studies. Interacts with equipment and patient to obtain accurate data. Monitors the patient’s behavior and status throughout the study, attending to the patient’s needs and making accommodations as necessary. Notifies the supervisor if problems arise.
- Documents abnormalities, recognizes and documents pathology, and differentiates and documents artifacts from physiological data.
- Performs related clinical duties as required.
